EAST WINDSOR - An unidentified, homeless man was found dead in a camper trailer on wooded property off North Water Street after a fire there Monday, authorities said.
The East Windsor Police Department is working in conjunction with state police, the chief state's medical examiner's office, and state and local fire marshals to determine the cause of the Monday night's fire and death.

Officials responded to a 911 call at 9:58 p.m. for medical assistance near 45 N. Water St., police said.

Warehouse Point Fire Chief James Barton said when he and the police arrived on the scene, a camper trailer on the wooded property was fully engulfed in flames.

The fire chief called for additional assistance from the Broad Brook Fire Department.

Three engine companies, a ladder truck, and the tactical rescue unit responded, Barton said, suppressing the blaze within 15 minutes.

"We began to extinguish the fire and noticed a body inside," the chief said.

Police Sgt. Michael J. Hannaford said there were two separate "makeshift units" on the property; however, the fire did not spread to the second unit.

"The victim would be considered homeless," Hannaford said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Barton said.

The 15.22-acre 3-parcel property between North Water Street and North Main Street, near Enfield is owned by the Rocky River Realty Co., with a post office address in Hartford, officials said today.

An unidentified man living in the other camper unit was taken by police for questioning, Barton said.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of the next of kin. The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police Sgt. Michael R. Poliquin at 292-8240.
