Motor Vehicle Information

 

Credit may be applied to a motor vehicle tax bill if the vehicle is sold, stolen, totaled, or removed and registered in another state when proper documentation is provided. 

1. Receipt from the Department of Motor Vehicles indicating that the vehicle's registration has been canceled, or that the plate has been lost or stolen.

2. One of the following in addition to #1 above:

  • A copy of the new owner’s validated registration

  • Bill of Sale – either registration transfer or a handwritten Bill of Sale

          (Handwritten Bill of Sale must provide the following information: Date of Sale, Year, Make, Model & VIN # of the Motor Vehicle, and Signature of both the buyer and seller)

  • Donated vehicle – must provide a letter on the organization’s letterhead with the following:
    • Date of Donation
    • Year, Make, Model & VIN # of the Motor Vehicle
    • Signature of person(s) authorized to accept vehicle as a donation
  • Transfer of Title - the seller must provide the Assessor w/ a copy of the signed title (both sides)
  •  Trade-in vehicle – a copy of the purchase agreement identifying the trade-in vehicle

  • Stolen, Totaled or Repossessed vehicle – a statement from the insurance company/agent, on their letterhead, indicating that the vehicle was stolen, totaled, or repossessed & NOT RECOVERED or RECLAIMED. Vehicle must be described including VIN #. Date of loss must be stated. A copy of the police report may also be provided, if it indicates the vehicle was totaled.

  • Junked vehicle – a receipt from junkyard.  A dated receipt must state year, make, model and VIN (vehicle identification number) of vehicle on company letterhead.

  • Out of State registration requires proof of new state residency (EX: a readable copy of driver’s license) and a copy of the validated registration showing the date the vehicle was registered outside the State of Connecticut

CANCELLATION OF REGISTRATION RECEIPTS FROM DMV ARE NOT SUFFICIENT PROOF THAT YOU NO LONGER HAVE POSSESSION OF THE VEHICLE AND WILL NOT BE USED TO ALLOW CREDIT WITHOUT ONE OF THE ABOVE DOCUMENTS.

NOTE: ALL INFORMATION MUST BE DATED & HAVE THE VEHICLE ID NUMBER (VIN) ON  ALL DOCUMENTATION
